440 leans toward gentler sounds than most of Shimokitazawa's rock-focused live houses — acoustic pop and folk acts in a room that holds around 80 people. By day the same space runs as a café with an outdoor balcony.
It's a good counterpoint if you want a quieter night in a neighborhood otherwise known for volume.
440 opened in May 2002 as an offshoot of the live house CLUB251, built specifically around acoustic and solo-artist sets rather than full bands.
Reviews are milder here than at some of the site's other picks — reviewers describe a spacious, aesthetically pleasing room and reasonably priced drinks (¥600–800), but more than one review lands on some version of \"solid, nothing special.\" A few longtime visitors fondly recall catching outdoor sets in front of the building.
Worth knowing this one leans toward a reliable, pleasant standby rather than a must-see according to the reviews we found — still positive, just less effusive than Shelter or Bauhaus.
