Live House

Shelter

Shimokitazawa's original — a basement room that's hosted more formative Tokyo indie and rock gigs than almost anywhere else, running since 1991.

Shelter is part of the Loft family of venues and has been Shimokitazawa's defining live house since 1991. The basement room holds around 250 people, with a reputation for a punishing but rewarding sound system that's shaped a generation of Tokyo indie and rock acts.

It's an easy first stop for a visitor curious about Shimokitazawa's live house scene — central, well documented, and still booking most nights of the week.

Part of the Loft Project family alongside Shinjuku Loft, Shelter has at least one show most nights, generally starting around 20:00.

What Visitors Are Saying

Shelter draws some of the most enthusiastic reviews on the site, including from fans who compare the room directly to the anime Bocchi the Rock! and say the resemblance is uncanny. Reviewers describe a tiny room (60–80 standing) with real energy, meet-and-greet access to bands after sets, and staff reviewers repeatedly call exceptionally helpful, including with buying tickets on the spot.

Popular shows sell out, and reviewers advise booking ahead rather than risking a walk-in. The one consistent gripe is volume — more than one reviewer says the sound was simply too loud for their taste, which tracks with a room this small hosting full rock sets.
